Staying Healthy from APDA/Hampton Roads and American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA)

Many thanks to our colleagues at the APDA/Hampton Roads and the APDA national organization who sent the information out regarding COVID-19:

You can also learn more about the Parkinson’s community and COVID-19 from the APDA here. In the meantime, it is important to think about staying healthy in every sense of the word. Times like these help us to reflect on how to truly live well. You will likely find yourself staying home much more, but there are a number of ways to make sure that you stay well physically, emotionally, and mentally. Here are a few resources that may be helpful to you in the coming weeks:

Stay well physically: There are many outlets telling us how to keep from getting sick (wash your hands!), but have you thought about keeping fit while tai chi or boxing sessions are cancelled? The American Parkinson Disease Association offers a booklet of exercises that you can do in the comfort of your own home. You can find the booklet online here.

Stay well emotionally: Have you been involved in a local support group? Maybe now is the time to set up an old-fashioned phone tree to have a chat with someone from your group. If you’re not in a support group, try reconnecting with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. If you prefer the online route, or would like to supplement your other activities, try the APDA’s online Smart Patients portal. You can join a chat and communicate with others going through some of the same things you are.

Stay well mentally: If you were hoping to attend an upcoming educational program that has been postponed, or are looking for additional information on a specific topic, the APDA has a number of free webinars available onlineDr. Rebecca Gilbert’s blog is also a great resource to learn more on specific topics of interest.
